Barragem do Arade. The Barragem do Arade was built in the 1950s and is just off the EN 124, about half way between Silves and São Bartolomeu de Messines. The road down to the lake is clearly sign posted, but it's advisable to take the left turn by the water tower, to avoid a long windy drive.

If you want your 1 week in The Algarve in a quieter time then May, June and September (which is out of the typical school vacation time for Europe) would be ideal. While it does begin to get cooler in spring, the ocean air temperature is still pleasant for beach walks and to take in the scenery.

Portimão. Portimão is one of the bigger places on the Algarve coast, after Faro. It's been a settlement since prehistoric times but is now one of the most touristic places on the Algarve. Praia de Rocha is one of the most well-known beaches, with its distinctive small rock foundations out in the bay, and it's a cheap (like 70c cheap) bus.
